‘I lost my mum suddenly, then my big brother died on holiday in Spain’

A heartbreaking story of loss and resilience has emerged from Merthyr Tydfil as 17-year-old McKenzy Lee-Dominy shares his journey of coping with the sudden deaths of his mother and brother. McKenzy lost his mum when he was just 14 years old and tragically, three years later, his brother Harvey passed away while on holiday in Spain. Harvey, who was 21 and completing a painting and decorating course, was found dead in his hotel room in Benidorm by his friends. The cause of his death remains unknown as an inquest has been adjourned. The family continues to grieve, struggling with the uncertainty surrounding Harvey’s passing.

Despite the immense grief he has faced, McKenzy has found solace in writing fiction. He has published three novels, two of which are available for sale at Waterstones and Amazon. Writing has been a therapeutic outlet for McKenzy, allowing him to express his emotions and navigate through his pain. He poured his grief into his writing, with his latest book, “Cordelia Kills,” being completed within 24 hours following Harvey’s death. The novel delves into themes of loss and sibling bonds, reflecting McKenzy’s personal experiences.

McKenzy emphasises the importance of seeking professional support for mental health struggles, acknowledging the stigma that can hinder young men from seeking help. He received bereavement counselling at both school and college, highlighting the vital role of support systems in his healing process. Writing has become a cornerstone of his journey towards acceptance and understanding of his grief.

Despite the tragedies that have befallen him, McKenzy remains resilient and determined to pursue his passion for writing. His dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed, with his teacher, Joanna Richards, praising his talent, drive, and resilience in overcoming adversities. McKenzy aspires to become a professional writer and is currently studying A-levels in English literature, sociology, and business studies.
