Met Office issues new warnings for wind and rain days after flooding

The Met Office has issued new warnings for wind and rain in the UK, just days after areas were affected by flooding. There is a yellow rain warning covering much of southern England and South Wales from 4 pm on Sunday to 9 am on Monday. Between 20-30mm of rain is expected in the warning area on Sunday, with some areas on higher ground possibly seeing 50-80mm. The recent weather has left rivers already high and the ground saturated, increasing the risk of further flooding, according to Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell. Along with the rain warning, a yellow wind warning is in place for south-west England and Wales from 9 am on Sunday until the end of the day. Gusts of 50-60mph are expected, potentially leading to travel disruption, fallen trees, large waves, and some power cuts.

The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings and alerts across England, with 48 flood warnings and 90 flood alerts in place on Saturday morning. While more rain warnings could be issued for Monday, the weather is expected to become drier later in the week. Temperatures are currently below average, with frost seen in some areas on Friday night. The weekend temperatures are forecasted to be 3-4°C below average, with temperatures in the low double figures on Sunday. Recent heavy rain led to localised flooding across parts of England, with some counties in the south and central regions experiencing more than 250% of their average September rainfall.

Some areas saw more than their monthly average rainfall in just a few days, leading to significant disruptions in road and rail services. Severe flooding at Wellington station in Shropshire forced the cancellation of rail services between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton. The Marston Vale line in Bedfordshire is also suspended due to standing water on the track. About 650 properties were flooded in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, and other areas, with the Environment Agency protecting approximately 8,200 properties. The recent weather conditions have caused challenges for commuters and residents, with the forecast indicating further unsettled weather ahead for the UK.
