A group of isolated pensioners in Swansea has found a unique way to combat loneliness by engaging in various activities together. With over 500 members, the seniors participate in activities like long walks, movie screenings, boat rides, bowling, and dancing as part of the Ageing Well Initiative. The initiative, launched as a partnership between Swansea Council, Action for Elders, and others post-pandemic, aims to provide social opportunities for the elderly.
Alison Woodward, a 66-year-old retiree, shared her experience of joining the Ageing Well activities after feeling isolated post-retirement. She expressed how the initiative helped her reconnect with old friends and alleviate loneliness. The initiative, which initially started as social walks, now offers a wide range of activities such as Silver Screen, Aches and Lanes Bowling, LGBTQ+ coffee mornings, and Dance to Health, among others.
Rhys Ananicz, the Ageing Well Co-Ordinator, highlighted the growth of the initiative in membership over the years, emphasising the importance of combating loneliness and isolation among the elderly. The group has now become a close-knit community where members support one another through various life transitions and challenges.
Rachel Luxton, a 65-year-old regular participant, described the group as a ‘family’ where individuals share common experiences of loneliness and find solace in each other’s company. Swansea Council Community Cabinet Member Hayley Gwilliam stressed the significant impact of tackling loneliness and isolation on the well-being of residents, indicating the council’s commitment to creating an age-friendly city.
Apart from the regular activities, the Ageing Well Initiative also organises a choir, quizzes, projects with local youth clubs, and day trips for residents over 50. Additionally, the seniors can enjoy a free cruise along the River Tawe aboard the Copper Jack vessel, further enhancing their social interactions and experiences.
