Teen who put pain down to break-up or milk diagnosed with ovarian cancer

A 19-year-old woman, Storm Reveley, initially attributed her stomach ache to the “anxiety” following a recent break-up. Little did she know that she was actually battling ovarian cancer. Storm, now 22, from Nottingham, had been experiencing stomach pains after parting ways with her ex-partner. She first dismissed the pain and loss of appetite as anxiety from the break-up before considering lactose intolerance and eliminating dairy from her diet. However, as her symptoms progressed to include bloating, lightheadedness, painful bladder, and abnormal bowel movements, she sought medical help.

Initially, doctors suspected irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but advised her to return if her pain persisted. When Storm’s symptoms persisted, she went to Nottingham City Hospital, where a mass was discovered in her stomach, initially thought to be a twisted ovarian cyst. Following emergency surgery to remove the mass, it was revealed to be a tumour the size of an “18-week-old foetus.” Subsequent biopsy results confirmed she had germ cell ovarian cancer, leading to four cycles of chemotherapy and ultimately being declared cancer-free.

Storm shared her emotional journey, revealing the challenges she faced, from losing her hair and wearing wigs to struggling with body image changes. She highlighted unexpected aspects of cancer treatment, including the impact on fertility and the emotional toll post-treatment. Storm emphasized the need for ongoing support even after ringing the bell to signify the end of her treatment.

Reflecting on her experience, Storm expressed her concerns about fertility issues and coping with the changes in her body. Despite the challenges, she remained positive throughout her treatment but acknowledged the complexity of emotions that surfaced post-treatment. Storm’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to overcome unforeseen health battles and the importance of seeking timely medical intervention for unusual symptoms.

Throughout her journey, Storm’s resilience and determination shone through, exemplifying the strength required to navigate a cancer diagnosis at a young age. Her story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges and underscores the significance of early detection and proactive healthcare.
