Dad tells of heartbreaking trip to collect grandchildren after their dad died on Jet2 flight home from family holiday

The father of a man who tragically passed away on a flight home from a family holiday has shared a touching tribute to his son. Chris Neill, aged 40, fell ill on a Jet2 plane flying from Burgas in Bulgaria to Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport and unfortunately, passed away after the flight diverted to Cologne, Germany. Chris had been returning from a holiday with his children when he became unwell onboard the flight.

During the flight, Chris received oxygen and was moved to the front of the aircraft before landing in Germany. Upon disembarking, he collapsed on the tarmac, believed to have suffered a severe heart attack. Despite immediate medical attention, Chris did not survive. His father, Mal Neill, flew to Germany the following day to bring Chris’s children, Reece, 19, and Archie, 8, back to the UK.

Mal described Chris, an Everton supporter and fitness enthusiast, as someone who was cherished by everyone. The family is now seeking donations to repatriate Chris’s body back to the UK as they face unexpected expenses due to an expired travel insurance policy. They are aiming to raise £15,000 to cover coroner’s fees in Germany, repatriation, and funeral costs in England.

Mal recalled the distressing ordeal, highlighting the challenges they faced with travel insurance and the immediate aftermath of Chris’s passing. He praised Jet2 for their support in assisting the family during this difficult time. Describing Chris as a lively and caring individual who adored his children, Mal emphasised the positive impact his son had on those around him.

The Neill family is grateful for any contributions towards bringing Chris back home and giving him a farewell befitting the loving father and son that he was. To offer support or learn more about the fundraising efforts, please visit the donation page.
