Mothers Pay Tribute to Children Tragically Caught in Rip Tide
The mothers of two young people who tragically lost their lives after being caught in a rip tide on Bournemouth beach have emotionally honoured their memories at the beginning of an inquest into their deaths last year. Joe Abbess, aged 17, and Sunnah Khan, aged 12, drowned during the incident, with eight other individuals receiving treatment from paramedics after the rip tide incident next to Bournemouth Pier on May 31. Following the unfortunate event, Dorset Police seized the pleasure cruiser Dorset Belle, which operated trips from Bournemouth Pier, and apprehended a man in his 40s on suspicion of manslaughter. However, after expert consultation as part of their investigation, the police determined that the movement of the Dorset Belle did not contribute to the dangerous sea conditions that led to the tragedy. Consequently, the arrested individual will not face further action. During a pre-inquest review, Coroner Rachael Griffin confirmed that the Dorset Belle was not a factor in the deaths of Joe and Sunnah.
Joe’s mother, Vanessa Abbess, shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Joe as a “generous, loving, caring, hard-working, and funny” son. She expressed the family’s devastation over his untimely passing and highlighted his promising future as a trainee chef for Southampton Football Club. Vanessa recalled the moment she messaged Joe while he was at the beach with friends, coincidentally at the same time the incident occurred, reflecting on a possible intuition that prompted her to reach out to him. Harriet Short, representing the family, continued reading Vanessa’s statement, recounting the events leading up to Joe’s tragic death and the heartbreaking moment she learned of his passing.
Vanessa detailed the emotional toll of identifying Joe’s body at the hospital, expressing profound grief and disbelief over the sudden loss of her son. The family held a poignant funeral for Joe, emphasising the lasting impact his absence has had on his friends and loved ones. Vanessa also raised concerns about the lack of lifeguards and safety measures on the beach, calling for enhanced education on sea safety to prevent similar tragedies.
In another touching tribute, Stephanie Williams remembered her daughter, Sunnah Khan, as a popular and fiercely protective individual with a kind and vibrant personality. Stephanie described Sunnah’s character and the deep love everyone held for her. She highlighted Sunnah’s warmth, humour, and unwavering support for her family and friends, underscoring the immense void left by her absence. The families of Joe and Sunnah are advocating for improved sea safety education in schools in memory of the young lives lost, aiming to prevent future tragedies through awareness and preparedness.
The coroner’s review provided insight into the circumstances surrounding the rip tide incident, with families and authorities reflecting on the profound impact of Joe and Sunnah’s deaths. Their memories endure as reminders of the importance of vigilance and safety measures in coastal areas, ensuring that families do not have to endure similar heartbreak in the future.
