Tributes paid as Mayor of Cardiff dies

Tributes have poured in following the sad news of the passing of Cardiff’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Jane Henshaw. The council announced that Councillor Henshaw peacefully passed away surrounded by her family over the weekend. Taking on the esteemed role just this May, she had nominated Cardiff Food Bank as her chosen charity, reflecting her deep personal connection to the cause. As a mark of respect, flags are set to be flown at half-mast from all council buildings across the city, honouring her memory.

Described as a dedicated public servant with a heart for the community, Councillor Henshaw leaves behind a legacy of compassion and commitment to serving others. Cardiff Council expressed their condolences, highlighting her unwavering dedication and service to the city. Council leader, Councillor Huw Thomas, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging her tireless efforts to improve Cardiff for all residents.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Helen Lloyd Jones, remembered Councillor Henshaw as a beacon of hope and kindness in the community. Her warm smile and dedication to helping those in need left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She was praised for her ability to connect with people and make them feel valued. Chief executive, Paul Orders, also paid tribute to her kindness, grace, and unwavering support for those in need.

Representing the Splott ward and serving as a Labour councillor since 2017, Councillor Henshaw’s tenure was marked by numerous achievements aimed at improving local infrastructure, supporting community projects, and promoting inclusivity. Her focus on addressing food insecurity and poverty showcased her deep commitment to the well-being of the community. She often expressed her determination to support Cardiff Food Bank in any way possible, emphasising the importance of their work in changing lives during challenging times.

Councillor Henshaw is survived by her partner Bill, four children, and five grandchildren. Her daughter, Angharad Anderson, stood by her side as the Lady Mayoress. The family expressed gratitude to the staff at The University Hospital of Wales, Velindre Cancer Centre, and Marie Curie Hospice for their care and support. A private family funeral will be held, followed by a Memorial Service to honour her life and contributions to the city.
