A pensioner’s house in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, was struck by lightning causing a massive explosion, as an amber weather warning began in the UK. The incident occurred on Bambury Street, with the lightning hitting the semi-detached house on Saturday before 5.25pm. Emergency services responded, evacuating neighbours and establishing a cordon around the property. A security camera footage from a nearby home captured the intense moment of the lightning strike, igniting a huge explosion. The roof of the house was hit, leading to orange smoke rising and subsequent damage to the property.
The 79-year-old woman who owns the house has been rendered homeless due to the severe destruction caused by the lightning strike. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Hayley Johnson aims to assist the elderly woman in repairing her flooded home and roof, as her insurance does not cover lightning strikes. The plea for help has garnered nearly £2,000 towards its £10,000 target.
Meanwhile, an amber weather warning for heavy rain has come into effect in parts of England, with the Met Office forecasting over 100mm of rain in some areas on Monday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and hail ushered in the autumn season, with the warnings extending across Wales and England. The Met Office cautioned of potential disruptions and flooding due to the deluge of rain, urging caution and safety among residents.
As the heavy rain warnings persist, authorities have issued flood warnings in several parts of England, including Warwickshire, Bedfordshire, and London. The Environment Agency issued alerts for areas with potential flooding, advising residents to stay vigilant. Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey highlighted the cooling trend expected across the UK, with temperatures dropping below average for this time of year.
Bedfordshire Police advised the public to contact emergency services only for immediate life-threatening situations, as teams work to aid those affected by the adverse weather conditions. The ongoing weather warnings underscore the need for preparedness and vigilance during the inclement weather expected in the coming days.
