Mum learns son, 2, is dying in a phone call after she nipped out of the house

A tragic incident left 38-year-old Samantha Walsh from Wigan devastated when she learnt that her two-year-old son, Carter Walsh, had passed away following an accident at their home in Greater Manchester. The heartbreaking news was delivered to Samantha in a phone call from her niece, initially indicating that Carter had “banged his head.” However, the reality was much more gruesome as a marble fireplace had collapsed on him after a section suddenly gave way.

Upon rushing home, Samantha found emergency services attempting to save young Carter, but despite their efforts, he tragically passed away later in the hospital. Samantha, who has four children, described her son as the “apple of our eyes” and expressed how dearly he was loved not just by the family but by everyone who knew him.

Earlier on the same day, Carter had enjoyed what was described as the “best day ever” with family members, meeting his grandmother’s horse and playing with his cousin and aunt. However, within half an hour of Samantha leaving the house, the unthinkable happened, leading to a prompt arrival of ambulance services. Describing the incident, Natalie, Samantha’s relative, shared how the marble fireplace collapsed, causing the fatal accident.

Despite the efforts of paramedics and a quick response, Carter’s injuries proved fatal. Samantha’s mother, who is a nurse, had prepared her for the worst, and when Samantha reached the hospital, she saw her son looking peaceful, with no signs of a life-threatening injury visible on his face.

Samantha recounted the struggles she faced to regain custody of Carter after he was briefly in foster care following his birth. She expressed the immense pain of losing her “best mate” and the difficulty she had in returning to their home after the tragic event.

Greater Manchester Police provided support to Samantha and her family following the devastating incident, which occurred at their residence in Wigan. The authorities were alerted to the situation on Fisher Close and despite the best efforts of paramedics, Carter Walsh succumbed to his injuries.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed their response to the emergency call, and Carter was transported to the hospital by road. The community has rallied around Samantha and her family during this challenging time, showing their support and compassion in the wake of such a heartbreaking loss.
