Monty Don unveils best month to plant bulbs – and it isn’t in Spring

On a recent episode of BBC Gardeners’ World, Monty Don, the well-known gardening expert, shared valuable insights on the optimal timing and depth for planting bulbs as we welcome the end of summer. The knowledgeable horticulturalist highlighted that certain plants thrive best when sown in a specific month, particularly springtime favourites like crocus and early irises. He even showcased one of his favourite daffodil varieties, tete-a-tete, known for its rich colour and petite trumpet, which he planted during the demonstration.

According to Monty, September is an ideal month for planting most bulbs, as the ground is still warm, allowing roots to establish and strengthen before winter. He advised that daffodils, muscari, early irises, crocus, and fritillaries benefit from being planted in early autumn. However, he noted that September can also be a dry month, making the soil challenging, particularly for grass. Monty recommended using a bulb planter for efficient and durable planting, stressing the importance of planting bulbs at the correct depth.

In a previous podcast appearance in 2023, Monty described the concept of creating a “bulb lasagne,” which involves layering different bulb varieties in pots to achieve a visually appealing garden feature. Starting with a large pot filled with compost and appropriate drainage, one should layer bulbs without them touching, covering with soil and repeating the process. Monty suggested placing the earliest blooming bulbs on top and the later blooming ones at the bottom, likening this technique to a “good recipe” for a stunning display.

Monty Don’s gardening expertise continues to inspire viewers with practical tips and innovative approaches to bulb planting, encouraging gardeners to make the most of the autumn planting season. His passion for horticulture shines through as he shares his knowledge and experiences, making gardening accessible and enjoyable for enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting, Monty’s advice serves as a valuable resource for cultivating a vibrant and flourishing garden all year round.
