**Man Strangles and Punches Partner Following Disagreement Over Getting a Dog**
A disturbing incident unfolded when a man, identified as Andrew Symons, physically assaulted his partner after she expressed their inability to get a dog. The victim, left petrified, endured verbal abuse and violence at the hands of Symons during the altercation.
Symons, 33, from Cardiff, had a confrontation with his partner in the early hours of May 1 regarding their desire to acquire a dog. When the victim explained that their circumstances did not permit getting a pet, Symons erupted into a fit of rage, hurling insults and threats at her. Despite her attempts to calm the situation by mentioning their rental agreement and financial constraints, Symons responded with physical aggression.
In a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Symons proceeded to strike the victim, causing her physical harm. The victim, who was taken aback by Symons’ uncharacteristic behaviour, found herself in a terrifying situation. Symons continued his onslaught by grabbing her by the throat and pressing her against a door, instilling fear in the victim that her life was in danger.
As the victim suffered from bruises and marks due to the assault, Symons faced charges of intentional strangulation and assault resulting in actual bodily harm. In a poignant victim personal statement, the victim expressed the psychological toll of the traumatic incident, detailing the impact on her mental well-being.
During the court proceedings, Symons’ defence counsel cited his client’s struggles with alcoholism, early exposure to illicit substances, and psychological issues as contributing factors to the violent outburst. Despite these circumstances, the court found Symons lacking remorse and empathy towards the victim.
Ultimately, Recorder Alun Eynon-Evans sentenced Symons to 15 months in prison and imposed a five-year restraining order as a deterrent against future harm towards the victim. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of domestic abuse and the importance of seeking help in such distressing situations.
