A mother’s harrowing experience with two premature births and the exceptional care received at Singleton Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has touched hearts in Swansea, Wales. Rhiannon Hodgson found herself back at the NICU with her second son, Odin, born eight weeks early, weighing just 3lb 14oz. Her first son, Xavier, spent 21 days in the NICU after being born prematurely at 3lb 8oz. Rhiannon never imagined she would go through a similar ordeal again.
Xavier was born following an emergency caesarean section in June 2021, after concerns about his heart rate. He stayed in the NICU for 21 days before being able to go home. Fast forward to February 2023, Rhiannon woke up from a nightmare to find her waters had broken. Odin arrived shortly after, also eight weeks premature, and had to spend 18 days in the NICU before being strong enough to leave.
The family expressed their gratitude towards the NICU staff, especially Nurse Leigh Bainbridge, for their unwavering support through both challenging times. They recently donated money to Swansea Bay Health Charity, raised through fundraising efforts. Matron neonatal services, Helen James, praised the family’s generosity and stated the donation would benefit other families in need at the NICU.
Rhiannon and her husband Rhys commended the NICU nurses for their constant support and care, helping them bond with their sons during their time in the unit. Despite the unexpected turn of events with both sons requiring NICU care, Rhiannon shared her appreciation for the staff who guided them through the difficult journeys with their newborns. The family’s resilience and the exceptional care provided by NICU staff at Singleton Hospital serve as a testament to the strength and compassion found in the face of adversity.
