NHS issues fruit warning to people on certain medication

The NHS has issued a warning to individuals on specific medications, advising them to avoid consuming certain fruits. One woman shared her surprise on TikTok about the restrictions she faced while taking her tablets. In a video, Kate, also known as @kates_life_in_recovery, mentioned her discovery that grapefruit juice should be avoided while on sertraline, an antidepressant. She recalled enjoying the fruit after many years, only to remember her mother’s advice due to her own heart medication. Upon checking the medication box, she found the explicit warning to avoid grapefruit juice. The NHS supports this precaution, cautioning those on sertraline: “Do not drink grapefruit juice while you’re taking this medicine. Grapefruit juice can increase the amount of sertraline in your body and increase the risk of side effects.”

Sertraline is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to manage conditions like depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The medication functions by boosting serotonin levels in the brain and is solely available through a prescription. Apart from grapefruit, the NHS advises individuals to inform their doctor or pharmacist about any other medications, including herbal remedies, vitamins, or supplements. Additionally, certain groups of people may not be suitable candidates for sertraline, such as those with a history of allergic reactions to the medication, heart problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, glaucoma, epilepsy, or undergoing electroconvulsive treatment.

As the NHS continues to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with specific medications, it urges individuals to diligently follow prescribed guidelines and seek professional advice regarding their treatment regimen. It is crucial for patients to remain informed about the interactions between their medication and various food or drink choices to ensure their well-being and avoid any adverse effects. By staying proactive and proactive in their healthcare management, individuals can maintain their health and safety while undergoing treatment for various medical conditions.
