Warning Issued Over ‘Lethal’ Air Fryer Danger
University students heading back to campus have been cautioned about a significant safety risk posed by improperly packed items in their cars – particularly heavy objects like air fryers that could become lethal projectiles in the event of a crash. Graham Conway, from Select Car Leasing, highlighted the potential danger heavy items could pose, describing them as akin to a dangerous weapon during a collision. Research has indicated that even at modest speeds, items like air fryers could inflict a force equivalent to that of a fully grown bull on the driver or front-seat passenger.
Conway emphasised the popularity of air fryers among students for their affordability and convenience, noting that many may pack these heavy appliances for their journey to university. However, he underscored the importance of securing such items properly as they could become hazardous in the event of a sudden stop or crash. Findings from research by luggage brand Fixeta revealed that loose items in a car can increase their weight dramatically, up to 56 times, during such incidents, transforming ordinary household objects into potential threats. Even lighter items placed on the parcel shelf or back seat could become dangerous projectiles if not secured.
Moreover, Conway highlighted the legal ramifications of overloading vehicles or obstructing the driver’s view, stating that exceeding the vehicle’s weight limit could result in a £1,000 fine and three penalty points. In cases where overloading contributes to a serious accident, individuals could face imprisonment. He advised students and parents to pack responsibly for university, using strapping or bungee cords to secure heavier items and prevent potential dangers on the road.
In urging individuals to ensure that nothing loose could turn their journey to campus into a disaster, Conway emphasised the importance of taking precautions to secure items properly during transportation. As students prepare to embark on this new chapter in their lives, it is essential for them to be mindful of the potential risks associated with improperly packed items in their vehicles. By adhering to safety guidelines and securing items effectively, students can help ensure a safe and smooth journey as they head back to campus.
