Pensioner who won EuroMillions reveals the first thing he bought with winnings

A 71-year-old pensioner from Merseyside, Pete Daly, who won £582.20 on the EuroMillions in July, has revealed the struggles he faced while waiting for his winnings. Despite being promised his prize within 10 days, Pete experienced a delay of 52 days before finally receiving his cash prize. During this period, he had to rely on foodbanks and was unable to afford basic necessities like a haircut or new shoes.

Pete, from Pensby, Wirral, had used up all his available cash to pay for his car insurance, expecting his lottery winnings to sustain him for the month. However, with the funds not materialising as expected, he found himself in a financially precarious situation. He shared his frustration with the Liverpool Echo, stating that he had to live off food banks and was unable to go out due to financial constraints.

After receiving his EuroMillions payout, Pete disclosed that he had already spent half of his winnings, with the remaining amount needing to last until his pension payment arrived in a fortnight. He expressed relief at being able to afford new shoes and a haircut with his prize money. Despite being a regular EuroMillions player for over a decade, Pete has decided to boycott the lottery due to the delays he experienced in receiving his winnings.

A spokesperson for Allwyn, the lottery operator, expressed regret over the delay in processing Pete’s claim, citing the introduction of a revised claims process earlier in the year. They reassured winners that they would receive their prizes and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the claims process.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, Pete Daly shared his frustration with the EuroMillions delays, stating that he would no longer participate in the lottery. Despite his long history of playing EuroMillions, Pete felt that the delays were not worth the hassle and voiced his decision to stop playing, potentially costing the lottery operator £1,040 a year in lost revenue.

The ordeal faced by Pete Daly sheds light on the challenges lottery winners may encounter when claiming their prizes. Despite the joy of winning, delays in receiving the funds can have significant implications for individuals relying on the money for essential expenses. Pete’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of efficient processes in ensuring that winners promptly receive their prizes and can enjoy the benefits of their good fortune without unnecessary hardship.
