50 cats kept in horrific conditions in house including in cages and dirty cupboard under the stairs

Shocking news surfaced in Mountain Ash, Wales, as reports revealed that 50 cats were rescued from a property due to horrific conditions they were living in. The RSPCA intervened in 2023 and 2024 to save these innocent felines from appalling circumstances, including being crammed into cages filled with faeces and urine.

The property in question belonged to David Thomas and Pauline Perry, who were already prohibited from owning cats. Initially, 35 cats were rescued in October 2023, followed by an additional 15 in February 2024. The RSPCA described finding the cats “kept and crammed in metal cages which were full of cat faeces and urine.”

Pauline Perry faced charges in court related to breaching the ban on keeping pets and causing unnecessary suffering to the cats. Despite being banned from keeping cats, more felines were found in the property in dire conditions, leading to further interventions by the RSPCA and South Wales Police.

RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper detailed the grim scene at the property, including cats living in filthy cages and even discovering cats inside a small, dirty cupboard under the stairs. The cats showed signs of distress, with some underweight, urine-stained, and matted with faeces.

The rescued cats were taken to the RSPCA Merthyr Tydfil Veterinary Clinic for assessment and treatment. Sadly, one cat with a tumour on its tail had to be euthanised, while others required basic care like flea and worm treatments, and socialisation.

Pauline Perry received a lifetime disqualification order for all animals and a suspended custodial sentence, along with fines and conditions to reside at her home address. Despite the harrowing ordeal, the rescued cats showed improvement and were eventually rehomed in loving environments.

The RSPCA commended the progress made by the cats after being removed from the dire conditions they were subjected to, highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of animal neglect and cruelty. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to protect and care for animals in our communities.

As investigations continue and legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the mistreated animals and holding accountable those responsible for their suffering. The story of these 50 rescued cats serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance and action in safeguarding the welfare of animals.
