Around 30 homes were evacuated in a UK seaside resort town after police discovered “explosive” chemicals at a property, causing a major incident. The discovery led to residents being asked to leave their homes in St Leonards, East Sussex, as Sussex Police officers responded to the address on the A259 Marina. Authorities found chemicals at the property that were deemed a threat to life. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of producing illegal substances and creating explosive material for an unlawful purpose. Although the incident is not believed to be terror-related, a 100-metre cordon has been set up between Caves Road and Sussex Road, and some properties to the north in West Hill Road have also been included.
The Sussex Police spokesman mentioned that emergency services and partner agencies are working together as part of the Sussex Resilience Forum to address the situation effectively. A rest centre has been established by Hastings Borough Council at the Royal Victoria Hotel for displaced residents. The A259 Marina in St Leonards has been closed from the junction with Caves Road to Sussex Road due to the ongoing investigative efforts. Superintendent Michelle Palmer-Harris described the incident as complex but isolated, necessitating the evacuation of surrounding properties for safety reasons. She expressed gratitude to residents and the wider St Leonards community for their patience and cooperation during the evacuation process.
Labour MP for Hastings and Rye, Helena Dollimore, communicated her involvement in the situation and coordination with the Home Secretary to address the incident.
