Public Consultation Results in Potential Increase of Speed Limit on Several Roads in Swansea
In a recent development, Swansea City Council has unveiled plans to potentially raise the speed limit on a number of roads in Swansea from 20mph to 30mph. Following a public consultation process, which garnered over 600 responses suggesting 81 locations for potential exemption from the default 20mph speed limit, the council has identified 17 road and street locations that meet the criteria for a speed increase.
Some of the roads that could see their speed limits raised include Mayals Road, a section of Carmarthen Road at Llewitha, the A48 between Penllergaer and Pontlliw, Brynmill Lane, and sections of Gors Avenue and Townhill Road. These proposals come after the Welsh Government introduced the default 20mph speed limit in 2023, aiming to reduce collisions and mitigate the severity of injuries, especially for pedestrians.
Swansea had already secured more exemptions than any other council when the regulations were first introduced, allowing 30mph limits to be maintained on certain roads where deemed necessary. The current proposals, outlined in a series of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), are now open for final public consultation until April 15, 2025. The council emphasised that the review process for these potential changes adhered to strict Welsh Government guidelines, considering factors such as road characteristics, proximity to facilities, safety records, and environmental impacts.
Councillor Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, expressed gratitude to the public, ward members, and other stakeholders for their feedback, which played a crucial role in shaping the proposals for the 17 identified sites. The aim of these changes is to strike a balance between road safety and operational efficiency, taking into account the specific requirements of each location.
